Btw, I learned this week that 33% of the population of the city are now bilingual but English only schools are very few. Montreal is 50% bilingual. I'm glad since it shows a real potential of English movie goers that learn it from English classes, movies, television or in the work place.
Anyway, The Day The Earth Stood Still was a movie I was expecting to see in English. Yesterday, I looked at Cineplex site and the newspaper schedule just in case it was a mistake. Sadly, this was not the case. It was also snowing(snow storm) in the morning so even if was in English, I would had have to wait to see it.
The visual effects are there and the story is ....simple and I am expecting that anyway. For me, it's more of a summer movie with this cast in it: Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, Jaden Smith.
Last night, I watched again the 1951 version of The Day The Earth Stood Still on television. There was one thing that pop out and another I found ironic.
1. Kate Mulgrew, Captain Kathryn Janeway of Star Trek Voyager, has the same tone of voice as Patricia Neal(Helen Benson in the 1951 version). No family connection found.
2. Two doctors are speaking about the age of Klaatu. One mentioned that Klaatu look like a man of 35-38 years. The other doctor tell him that Klaatu told him that he is 78 years old and life expectancy is 130. Klaatu also told him that their medicine is more advanced. Here is the ironic part: While they were talking, they both were about to smoke cigarettes. You see, our medicine is more advanced now. Stop smoking! :D
Is The Day The Earth Stood Still a flop? The first weekend will not tell you but you can cut in half the next weekend box office. The only mentioned of the budget I found was 80 millions so it should tell you if they make money or not. Btw, these days, it's not a lot of money for a major sci-fi movie.
