Jon Stewart Did A Very Kind Gesture At The Oscars

Posted on February 25th, 2008 in Entertainment, Movie, News by Steve McGrath

I liked the hosting job that Jon Stewart did at The Oscars. Not every thing was perfect but it was funny most of the time despite the limited time to produce the The Oscars . But he did do a kind gesture: when the music(song) winners Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova got on stage, Glen Hansard made his speech but Marketa Irglova was cut off. Jon Stewart went and got back Marketa Irglova on stage so that she could do her speech too.

Yes, time is important at the The Oscars but Jon Stewart was right doing what he did.

    Blunder?

Every year during the Oscars, the Academy take time to remember fellow members of the movie industry that died during the passed year. Some are big names and some less known by the general public. I think the ideal is a nice gesture because we may had missed someone during the year that passed over. This year, and most recently, was marked by the death of Heath Ledger, and of course, they finished with him. But I also expected that they would had included Brad Renfro that died the week before him. He did have some known movies like: The Jacket, Apt Pupil, The Client and the upcoming The Informers.

Was it a blunder by the Oscars or the wish of the family? What were the criteria to be included in the montage?

Anyway, congrats to all winners even if I did not see most of those movies yet. At least, I can rent them. ;)

    Mini-Review: My Own Vantage Point

Posted on February 22nd, 2008 in Entertainment, Movie, Review by Steve McGrath

For once, it did not snowed on this Friday. But it’s getting to be a long winter with snow every few days. This last week was the most sunny with 5 days in row since November.

The theater had about 20 or so people for the first viewing of Vantage Point. It’s normal for an English movies at that showing(12h35) . I believe it will have more people tonight seeing that it’s the only English movie in Quebec City.

    What’s is Vantage Point?

It’s the different point of view of a few, thus Vantage Point title, people who all witnesses the assassination of the president of the USA in Spain.

    The movie

Wow! I really liked Vantage Point and the style was very interesting. I did not expect to like it that much. The way it was edited is like this: you have the main open sequence and then the president get shots. The clock rewinds 23 minutes and you see the same scene all over again but from a different Vantage Point. It goes on a few times but a bit faster. One “rewind” was with subtitles(Spanish part). Nothing is like what it seems or like I expected to be. Many surprises are in it. At the end, you see every missing pieces of the Vantage Point coming together. The movie is short(1h30) compare to the other movies and it’s perfect that way.

It’s with: Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker, William Hurt and many more known faces.

    Conclusion

Vantage Point is a must see movie in my opinion.

The only drawback is that it cost me $8.00 for an afternoon showing. Not so long ago, it was $6.50. At nights, it’s $12.00. That’s what happen when no competition exist anymore. Maybe, I will wait the following Tuesday instead and pay $4.95.

HD-DVD Lost, Blu-Ray Won And An End To Boycotting Universal/Paramount/Dreamworks

Posted on February 19th, 2008 in Entertainment, Movie, News, Passion by Steve McGrath

When Paramount decided to exclusively support HD-DVD in August, I decided to partially boycott them and not see their movies at the theater. I think, I went to seen only one since. It was easy for me because the number of English movies available was very small. :D I was mad, that by their action, they prolonged the HD format. Now, my boycott is over. Toshiba officially drop HD-DVD today. When will they start making a Blu-Ray player? They did not mentioned it.

Universal already announced that will join the Blu-Ray camp. But it will take some time to get their movies because there are behind the other studios on that front. That I understand it very well.

Surprisingly, Paramount/Dreamwork did not comment the news yet. Paramount, on another hand, has already a few movies in stock. They were not release when they made the switch to HD-DVD. They are behind by 6 months on that front. Maybe they want to make it special by announcing those titles in stock at the same time.

Don’t worry, price of Blu-Ray players will not rise because Blu-Ray has to compete with DVD and themself. Plus, those(vast majority) on the sideline will start to invest in Blu-Ray products. And don’t worry, your old DVD will still work in a Blu-Ray player. The image will be even better(upconvert) but it would not be real HD.

Toshiba has now it’s own Beta and Sony finally won in a format war :D

Let’s start watching HD(Blu-Ray) movies together hand in hand like happy movie fan’s!

    Mini-review: Knight Rider Version 2008

Posted on February 17th, 2008 in Movie, Review, Show, TV by Steve McGrath

I just finished watching the new version of Knight Rider (2008) (TV). I felt a bit nostalgic watching it. Yes, I was able to see it 3 hours sooner. That’s Canadian time shifting for you. :D

The TV story was average and worth watching. The car has more features and body now but it had to be because it’s 25 years later. During the Las Vegas scene, you will see the cameo of a famous TV casino. Just consider the studio who is making it. The end scene was not what I expected but had some mixed hints.
The potential to turn it into a series is there but with the recent faith of the Bionic Woman, it does not look that great. Maybe the rating won’t be so bad in both cases.

Could they start a new TV movie trend by showing updated version of TV shows? That I don’t mind much if it’s from time to time. Of course, they are making them now for the theater(X-Files, Simpson…) but with a much bigger budget. That, I do mind because it show a lack of imagination.

    Anyway, did you watched it?
