Piracy Is Good? - The Video

Posted on January 31st, 2008 in Business, Entertainment, Show, TV by Steve McGrath

This video is not new because it’s from 2005. The guy was making a case for changing the way we view television show and how it could be distributed. With the current writer’s strike, I though it could be another way to see a show.

    Mini-Review: Dragon Wars / D-War (Blu-Ray)

Posted on January 30th, 2008 in Blu-Ray, Entertainment, Movie, Review by Steve McGrath

One reason I got my Playstation PS3 was to start reviewing Blu-Ray movies on this blog. Not all movies come to my city so the next best thing is to buy or rent the Blu-Ray version of the movie. So, my first official Blu-Ray movie will be: Dragon Wars or D-Wars. The choice was limited at my video store. Made with a small budget of “only” 75 millions, Dragon Wars did not make a lot of wave in North America.

    What’s is Dragon Wars?

It’s based on a Korean legend about an evil serpent and it followers that must find a young women(Amanda Brooks) before the good serpent finds her. It’s every 500 years. The winner gets to be a dragon thus the title. A reporter(Jason Behr, Roswell) is investigating a strange disaster.

Other known cast members are: Robert Forster, Chris Mulkey, Elizabeth Peña.

    The movie

The acting is not that “bad”(5/10) but way out of winning an Oscar. I have seen much, much worst. The story is okay(5/10) and it’s situated mostly in L.A. with some in Korea(in the 1500s). The CGI(most of the budget) is okay but it’s harder to get good effects when most of Dragon Wars is in the daylight. Seeing all sort of creatures in the flying is hard to imagine in the first place. The combats in Los Angeles between the US army and the evil armies and the final combat is what this movie is all about. The first part of the movie was in Korean. The rest of the movie was in English with little bits in Korean.

    The extras

Not much on that front. It got a storyboard, art gallery and the documentary: 5000 Years in the Making. It’s been a long time since I watched a “Making of” . It’s about 19 minutes long. I did like it but it was more about the director Hyung-rae Shim and how he was able to make the movie. Just put the subtitles first because he does not speak English. Part of it is in English when it’s the Americans talking.

    Verdict

Dragon Wars is a rent if you want to leave your brain at the door. :D

Cloverfield Got Eaten Alive, Cloverfield 2?, Box Offfice Top 10

Posted on January 28th, 2008 in Entertainment, Movie, News by Steve McGrath

Much have been written about Cloverfield in the last week with me included. But this weekend, Cloverfield got eaten alive by the other 3 movies(Meet The Spartans, Rambo, 27 Dresses) . It finished in fourth places with only $12.7 million. It’s a drop of 68 percent from Cloverfield’s first weekend of $41 Millions.

What I thought would happen, happened. Big movies always fell by 50% the next weekend with a top position of 1 or 2. The true “fans” went to see it while others stayed on the sidelines or went to see the other movies.

    Cloverfield 2

That being said, I doubt a Cloverfield 2 will be made if the estimated numbers are still good. If they do one, it will be a direct to video. They did make a profit after all. But people getting sick did not help unless they change the style of filming by shooting a regular action movie. Then it may have a shot at theater again. Cloverfield will still make big money when it’s release on DVD.

    Box Offfice Top 10

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

    1. “Meet the Spartans” $18.7 million
    2. “Rambo” $18.2 million
    3. “27 Dresses” $13.6 million
    4. “Cloverfield” $12.7 million
    5. “Untraceable” $11.2 million
    6. “Juno” $10.3 million
    7. “The Bucket List” $10.2 million
    8. “There Will Be Blood” $4.9 million
    9. “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” $4.7 million
    10. “Mad Money” $4.6 million

For me, I did not see any new movies this weekend. Why? None were in English and 27 Dresses is a chick flick. ;) I won’t pay to see that one at the theater.

    Heath Ledger Is Dead

Posted on January 22nd, 2008 in Entertainment, Movie, News by Steve McGrath

The actor who is playing The Joker in The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger(28), was found dead this afternoon.

Heath Ledger was known for being one of the gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. I did liked him in A Knight’s Tale and Roar. Production for the Batman Begins sequel was already finished.

This is the second young actor to die in a week after Brad Renfro(25) who was found dead.
